In 2019, the government of South Africa passed the national health insurance (NHI) bill, reviving a debate as to whether social health insurance could be effectively implemented in the country. In this article, the author discusses the development process of the NHI bill against the backdrop of the country’s political and social environment. The study also discusses the constitutional right of public participation in health policy decision-making and its vital role in understanding the user perspectives to ensure successful implementation of the NHI.
Approachable and communicative leaders are required to facilitate public participation and to engage with the public and health workers.
