Health care systems in developing countries such as Tanzania depend heavily on out-of-pocket payments. This mechanism contributes to inefficiency, inequity and cost, and is a barrier to patients seeking care especially the vulnerable aging population, hence impede progress towards universal health coverage. To ensure that the vulnerable groups are protected from the financial burden of care, there are efforts to expand health insurance coverage to these groups, including older adults, in sub-Saharan african countries. In this peer reviewed journal the authors analyse whether having health insurance increases the likelihood of health service use in rural residents aged 60 and above in Tanzania.
