Malawi’s Ministry of Health tackles health financing and donor coordination challenges with innovative strategies, yet faces hurdles from power dynamics and donor-government priority misalignment.
A recent scholarly publication underscores the complexities arising from 166 financial sources and 265 implementation partners, leading to weakened cooperation and misalignment between government objectives and donor-driven initiatives. To address these issues, the Malawian Ministry of Health (MoH), with support from the Clinton Health Access Initiative, has implemented strategies to improve collaboration and aid alignment. However, broader structural concerns, including unequal power dynamics and misaligned interests between international donors and the Government of Malawi, persist. As Malawi initiates its Health Sector Strategic Plan 2023–2030, it is imperative to revise the aid framework to enhance coordination and effectively achieve UHC goals.
