Health system reform in El Salvador succeeded in mobilizing national and international financial resources to improve health infrastructure, both ambulatory and hospital, laboratories and blood banks.
The financing of the National Health System is a fundamental element and must be an enabling condition to advance towards Universal Health Coverage. Disaggregating national health spending between 2008 and 2014 revealed the national effort that was made to increase public spending on health in El Salvador. There was a significant increase in financial resources in that period, whose public spending on health grew from 1.8% in 2008 to 2.2% of Gross Domestic Product in 2012. However, the growth of public funds from the Ministry of Health has been insufficient to encourage and facilitate greater sectoral integration schemes.
