From a normative point of view, every woman should be able to easily access a healthcare facility that provides SONUB. This is not currently the case in most low-income countries. Policy-makers and healthcare planners need to make strategic decisions about investments that are feasible given limited resources and current priorities.
The aim of this project is to inform policy discussions on how to optimize or target the expenditure of marginal investments in maternal health at country level, in particular to examine the infrastructural needs for extending care coverage with skilled assistance. The research work undertaken as part of this project and presented in this report aims to investigate the issue of current accessibility to SONU training and the potential implications this could have in terms of policy recommendations and standard setting at international and national level.
