Based on Article 75, paragraphs 1 and 2 of the Constitution of the Republic of Macedonia, the President of the Republic of Macedonia and the President of the Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia approved the Law on Health Insurance through Decree on promulgation of the law on health insurance. The Assembly of the Republic of Macedonia adopted the law at the session held on 29 March 2000, Number 07-1296.
As stated by the law, this law regulates the health insurance of citizens, the rights and obligations of health insurance, as well as the manner of implementing health insurance. Health insurance is established as mandatory and voluntary.
- Mandatory health insurance is established for all citizens of the Republic of Macedonia for the purpose of providing health services and financial benefits on the principles of comprehensiveness, solidarity, equality and effective use of funds under the conditions determined by this Law and the regulations adopted on the basis of this Law.
- Voluntary health insurance is established for the provision of health services that are not covered by mandatory health insurance. Article 3 Mandatory health insurance is implemented by the Health Insurance Fund of Macedonia (hereinafter referred to as: the Fund). Voluntary health insurance may be implemented by insurance companies established in accordance with the insurance regulations.
