This report assesses the Kenyan health financing system in light of ongoing reforms and the Government of Kenya’s (GOK’s) ambitious commitments to achieve universal health coverage (UHC) through multiple initiatives. International experience suggests that effective health financing reforms can advance UHC by mobilizing sufficient resources to provide the services necessary for good health and by ensuring that these resources are pooled and spent equitably, protecting citizens from financial burden when seeking healthcare. Whether Kenya succeeds in this endeavor will depend on congruent actions across national and county governments. Overall, Kenya shows a willingness for policy experimentation and is also a source of private market digital and financial innovation which, if harnessed, can accelerate key future health system solutions.
