National Health Accounts for financial years 2020/21 to 2021/22

The NHA report provides a detailed analysis of Tanzania mainland’s health spending from 2019/20 to 2021/22, with a focus on 2021/22. Total Health Expenditure (THE) increased by 26% from 2020, reaching TZS 6.83 trillion (USD 2.9 billion) in 2022. Government contributions to health spending rose to 34%, while donor contributions decreased. Out-of-Pocket expenses remained substantial at 27%. The report also highlights a shift towards preventive care and increased spending on non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Recommendations include enforcing mandatory health insurance, boosting government funding for healthcare equity, enhancing donor coordination, and investing more in primary healthcare and preventive services.
