The National Health Insurance (NHI) Strategy aims to provide overall guidance and approach for the planned developments of social health protection in Lao PDR over the period 2021–2025.
The NHI strategy will support the goals of the Health Sector Reform Strategy 2021–2030 and the Health Financing Strategy 2021-2025, with the ultimate aim of achieving universal health coverage by 2025.
The five strategic objectives of the NHI Strategy 2021–2025 include:
- Improve the legal and policy framework of NHI and strengthen the National Health Insurance Bureau (NHIB) governance mechanism
- Strengthen financial independence, accountability, and sustainability of the NHI fund
- Strengthen NHIB’s institutional capacity and operational effectiveness and efficiency at all levels: National Health Insurance Bureau, Provincial Health Insurance Bureau and District Health Insurance Bureau
- Ensure responsiveness of health facilities and improve quality of health care services
- Raise awareness among the general population about NHI benefit entitlements
