This study examines the feasibility of developing a national health insurance system as a way to achieve universal health coverage in Saudi Arabia. It also highlights the potential role of health insurance in improving health coverage, the quality of care, and accessing health services. Although establishing a national health insurance system poses many challenges, addressing them makes it feasible to provide and finance healthcare in the country.
The authors suggest, as the current health financing system does not assist in pooling resources and health risks, policymakers should consider the feasibility of developing appropriate health insurance mechanisms in the existing socio-cultural context of the country, which can pool resources from the government, employers, and workers.
