Sustainable and gender equitable capacity building for health financing in Africa - P4H Network

Sustainable and gender equitable capacity building for health financing in Africa

Across nine African countries, a Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) assessment reveals critical gaps in the health financing workforce. These challenges stem from systemic issues in training and institutional structures. As global funding shifts and domestic priorities evolve, governments must strengthen their capacity to make informed, equitable health financing decisions.
The assessment, based on data from nine African countries, underscores the urgency of addressing systemic gaps in the health financing workforce. With global funding patterns shifting, governments must increasingly rely on local expertise to set priorities and allocate resources efficiently and equitably. The report recommends strategic reforms to build and retain technical capacity, including fostering government-academic collaboration, strengthening in-service training, and supporting gender equity in recruitment and retention. Regional institutions and cross-border knowledge exchange are also vital to sustainable progress. These efforts are essential for creating resilient systems that can respond to future challenges and ensure effective, inclusive health financing.
