Health is central to the development of any country. Most countries including Nigeria have committed to provide access to quality health care without the financial burden to its population to ensure health for all. However, major obstacles still persist among them include insufficient financing for health and sub-optimal deployment of available health funding to purchase health services. In this paper, the Lancet Nigeria Commission presents an updated analysis of the status of the Nigerian health system and evidence to support a positive and realistic future for the country as it moves towards universal health coverage (UHC). The Commission addresses issues related to health financing and how that is critical in driving the UHC agenda by making sure that the vulnerable are protected from catastrophic costs of care. The aim of the commission is to reposition future health policy in Nigeria to achieve UHC and better health for all.
