An effective health system is one that meets the health needs of its population by providing equitable access to affordable, high-quality health care including treatment and preventive services (WHO, 2005). To meet such a mandate, most countries have defined an essential basic health care package which is a package of services that the government is providing or is aspiring to provide to its citizens in an equitable and affordable manner. EPHS have the potential to reduce financial risk burden and increase access to quality healthcare services. This snapshot explores several important dimensions of the EPHS in South Sudan, such as how government policies contribute to the service coverage, population coverage, and financial coverage of the package.
