ThinkWell’s report on Burkina Faso’s gratuity policy

On March 2, 2016, Burkina Faso’s Council of Ministers, enshrined the implementation of free healthcare measures for women and children under the age of five.
ThinkWell and its research partner RESADE carried out a detailed analysis of the policy in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MOH). This analysis is part of ThinkWell’s SP4PHC (Strategic Purchasing for Primary Health Care) project to improve primary health care, which has been implemented in five countries with the support of a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
The team examined the free-of-charge policy to better understand how it works on the ground, what challenges it faces and what lessons can be learned for moving forward. The evaluation was based on a literature review, data analysis and key informant interviews (KIIs).
