What influences the impact of health financing reforms? Using qualitative comparative analysis to identify patterns in health financing systems and their effects on financial protection

The research article What influences the impact of health financing reforms? Using qualitative comparative analysis to identify patterns in health financing systems and their effects on financial protection, authored by Justine Hsu, Matthew Jowett, Anne Mills, and Kara Hanson, offers a groundbreaking examination of how health financing system attributes affect the success of policy interventions aimed at financial protection. Published under an open-access Creative Commons license, this study is the first to apply Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) to health financing data.

Through a systematic review of 128 studies and QCA methodology, the authors identify patterns and interdependencies between system arrangements—such as revenue raising, pooling, and purchasing—and their effects on catastrophic health expenditures. The findings reveal that a combination of multiple system attributes is required for positive impact, while the presence of even one attribute can mitigate negative outcomes.

This research provides critical insights into the complexities of health financing systems and highlights the importance of tailored, context-sensitive reforms to improve financial protection globally.
