Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development

The BMZ is responsible for the German state development policy and operates at the interface between strategic partners, development countries and non state actors. It focuses on intergovernmental and global cooperation and defines guidelines, concepts and rules for the implementation of development projects. As a founding member, the BMZ supports the work of the P4H network and its members towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Broad membership, political neutrality, capital and know-how – these are the things that make international organisations important players for development cooperation. They offer forums for discussing development policy principles or developing international standards for economic, social and environmental policies.

Multilateral institutions play a leading role in the implementation and coordination of development cooperation in partner countries. They realise large-scale programmes in partner countries and, thanks to their special legitimacy, they frequently coordinate the inputs of various donors.

Why do we need development policy?

Today, our lives are much more interconnected with those of people living on other continents than ever before. We have many advantages because of that. However, it also means that we have greater responsibility than previous generations, because the international community is facing challenges for which it needs to find global solutions. Radical changes need to be made – at global level and as soon as possible. Germany is taking on its responsibility for that.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

On 25 September 2015, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted at the UN summit in New York. It takes the form of a pact on the world's future and is intended to help enable all people in the world to live a life of dignity. The 17 development goals in the Agenda link the principle of sustainability with economic, ecological and social development. For the first time ever, poverty reduction and sustainability have been united in a single agenda.
