As part of the President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda, the Kenyan government put in place several strategies to facilitate the realisation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC). One of the strategies chosen was the introduction of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) with the goal of improving access to quality healthcare services without patients suffering financial hardship. The NHIF was initially piloted in four counties in 2018/2019 and has since been scaled up. To ensure sustainability and cost containment of NHIF, the government initiated a range of reforms that would transition and position the Fund as a strategic purchaser of healthcare services. The four categories of reforms include; the digitalization of NHIF processes, restructuring and realignment of the structure, benefits design, and amendment of the NHIF Act.
