On UHC day in December 2024, Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean nations reconfirm their commitment to access for their population to quality health services, without financial hardship. Achieving this goal is a particular challenge for small island developing states, and compounded by geographic isolation, limited economies of scale, and disproportionate exposure to natural disasters and climate change.
Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean nations celebrated the international day for Universal Health Coverage (UHC) on December 12th, 2024. Access to quality health services, without financial hardship is a particular challenge for small island developing states, as they are particularly vulnerable due to geographic isolation and limited economies of scale. Furthermore, they are particularly exposed to natural disasters and extreme weather events (worsened by climate change). Investment in building a resilient health system is a must for achieving UHC especially as countries continue to face severe hurricanes and climate-related emergencies.
Barbados and Eastern Caribbean countries tackle health inequities by expanding social protection programs, improving maternal and child health services, and addressing gender disparities in health access. As well as being fundamental to the population’s health and wellbeing, UHC is an important part of overall economic growth and development according to Mr Springett, UN Resident Coordinator.
