Canada launches dental care plan for uninsured citizens

The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a new initiative from the Liberal government designed to provide dental care insurance to uninsured Canadians with a household income of less than $90,000.

Officially launched in May, the program aims to cover up to nine million low- and middle-income Canadians by 2025. It’s a key element of the agreement between the New Democratic Party and the Liberals to sustain the minority government until 2025, with a budget of $13 billion over five years, followed by an estimated $4.4 billion annually.

Currently, the plan is accessible to seniors aged 87 and older, with additional groups like adults with disabilities and children under 18 becoming eligible in June. The program is flexible, allowing patients to visit a wide range of participating dental providers. Starting July 8, patients can also seek services from any dentist who agrees to direct bills through Sun Life, the insurance provider managing the plan.

The CDCP covers a wide variety of dental services, including check-ups, fillings, root canals, X-rays, cleanings, and gum care. Those with a household income between $70,000 and $90,000 may need to make co-payments, with additional fees possible for certain services. To learn more about the specifics of the coverage, including participating providers and detailed payment structures, visit the CDCP’s official website.
