Compulsory health insurance in Benin: in the face of concerns, the Government reassures

From January 2022, health insurance will be compulsory for all Beninese. The subject has raised many questions, and the Minister of Health, Benjamin Hounkpatin, has given an interview to the national and international press in order to reassure them of the steps being taken to make the measure effective.

We have already tested this approach in three health zones. Health insurance has therefore made it possible to cover the extremes, and we are now moving into the generalization phase. But beyond that, the government  with the support of the assembly that voted for it had to  make health insurance compulsory from January 1, 2022. For the basic basket, which includes the most basic illnesses that people have to deal with on a recurring basis, this will guarantee even more access to healthcare for people wherever they are. “said the Minister of Health.

For the 1st head of the health department, the questions raised by Beninese public opinion are legitimate and will be treated with the utmost care.

We’ll have an idea of the basic basket that will be set. We need to have an idea of this basic basket before we can have the actuarial cost of the basic basket “, said the Minister. According to him, Benin has a health training coverage of over 94%.
