In Maldives, the Public Health Fund has been established under the Public Health Protection Act as a source of finance for public health related purposes. Currently, Public Health Fund Regulation has been enacted.
Following the regulation, fines charged under the Public Health Protection Act, three percent duty on cigarettes and items having nicotine, and stipulated duty on unhealthy processed foods should be allocated to this fund. In addition, revenue from implementing this act and other revenues from health related purposes must be transferred to this fund as well.
The fund is managed by the Ministry of Health and overseen by the committee including the Health Minister, Director General of Public Health, two representatives from the Health Protection Agency , one representative from Maldives Food and Drug Authority, a legal officer of the Health Ministry, and three other staff from the Health Ministry.
