An analysis published in BMJ describes the Ethiopia healthcare quality initiative and lessons learned to inform the way Quality Improvement (QI) is designed, implemented, and how success is defined.
The authors argue that QI must move beyond only measuring average quality and change and focus on equity to support achieving the quality needed for effective universal health coverage (UHC). There is a need for a participatory approach that goes beyond the traditional clinical and individual focus and methods to include the broader systems, governance, and intersectoral responses needed to tackle underlying social determinants of access and health and structural inequity.
