Extension of free health care in Burkina Faso

The Minister of Health, Robert Jean-Claude Lucien Kargougou, announced on Monday August 12, 2024 that in addition to pregnant women and children under five, treatment for serious accidents, chronic and severe illnesses will be free in Burkina Faso by 2025.

In addition to the care reserved for pregnant women and children under the age of five, cases of accidents involving high care costs will be included in the free care policy,” said Minister Lucien Kargougou. The Minister was speaking this Monday, August 12, 2024 in Ouagadougou, at a workshop to develop and finalize communication materials on diseases with epidemic potential.

According to Dr. Kargougou, the cases covered by the free service include cancer, diabetes, hypertension, sickle cell disease and albinism.

Care for these diseases is expensive for many Burkinabe families, and their inclusion in the free policy could alleviate these burdens,” he argued.

Burkina Faso spends between 28 and 30 billion CFA francs a year to support free healthcare.
To take account of the new targets, the additional financial requirement is estimated at between 10 and 15 billion CFA francs a year, said Robert Lucien Kargougou.
According to him, this budget supplement will enable the introduction of new healthcare services, the inclusion of new drugs and new targets from 2025, depending on available resources.
