Final report of the WHO Council on the Economics of Health for All

This World Health Organization report, developed by the Council on the Economics of Health for All, presents a visionary framework for reshaping global economic systems to prioritise health and well-being.

Established in late 2020 by Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General, the Council was tasked with providing innovative economic thinking to reassess how health and well-being are valued, produced, and distributed across economies. Chaired by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, the Council comprises an all-female group of 10 distinguished economists and experts dedicated to reimagining economic systems that support Health for All.

The Council’s new report underscores the critical need to place health at the heart of governmental decision-making and private sector collaboration on regional, national, and international levels. It builds on the Council’s previous work, offering policy recommendations founded on a new economic narrative that emphasizes health as a central pillar of resilient and equitable societies.

“Our choices in directing public and private investments will shape whether we continue to grapple with major health challenges or successfully build a new political economy that delivers Health for All,” said Professor Mazzucato. The report advocates for strategic policy approaches that prioritize health, emphasizing the need for investments that support robust public health infrastructure, equitable access to healthcare, and sustainable development.

This landmark report is a call to action for policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders worldwide to adopt and implement policies that foster health and well-being for all citizens.
