Producers of coffee and cocoa, the two main agricultural products in the Ivorian economy, now benefit from health insurance fully paid for by the state, to the tune of 12 billion CFA francs (US$20 million) a year.
“From now on, all coffee and cocoa growers holding a grower’s card, as well as their families, will benefit from Universal Health Coverage (CMU)” Kobenan Kouassi Adjoumani.
The announcement comes from the Minister in charge of Agriculture, ahead of the opening of the 2024-2025 coffee and cocoa marketing campaign throughout the country. The Ivorian government estimates that one million farmers have held the professional coffee and cocoa producer card since the launch of the census operation in 2019.
“One billion CFA francs will be allocated each month, i.e. 12 billion CFA francs per year”, stressed the Minister of Agriculture, inviting all producers not yet registered to “do so soon” to benefit from the advantages of this insurance.
Official projections on Universal Health Coverage (CMU) enrolment forecast eight million people registered by the end of 2024, out of nearly 29 million inhabitants in Côte d’Ivoire, or 27.58% of the population. CMU entered its active phase in 2019, with nearly 2.9 million people set to benefit by 2020.
