The implementation of the government of Ireland’s 10 year health reform (SlainteCare) moves the country towards universal, single-tiered healthcare, where patients are treated on medical need rather than ability to pay.
In 2022, public funds covered 77% of total current health expenditure, while private insurance covered 12% and out of pocket expenditure the remaining 11%. The confirmation of the new Taoiseach (prime minister) Simon Harris, previously Minister of Health between 2016-2020 may forshadow additional political will supporting the SlainteCare goals.
