In 1963, the first health insurance scheme was initiated for members of the Jordanian armed forces (JAF). The Royal Medical Services (RMS) provides medical support to the forces, and is one of the leading health authorities in Jordan, playing a distinguished role in the Jordan health system and in all aspects of medical and health care at national and international levels. The RMS preserves the health of the officers and soldiers of the Jordanian armed and different security forces, provides tactical medical support for JAF units and medical support during allied military exercises.
