Health investments in Senegal: Dakar aims to become a health hub in the West African sub-region - P4H Network

Health investments in Senegal: Dakar aims to become a health hub in the West African sub-region

“Raising the national medical plateau: Dakar, new sub-regional medical hub?”. Senegal’s Minister of Health held a press briefing on the subject on May 8 in Dakar. The result is that the health authorities in the land of Teranga want to turn the capital into a “medical hub”.

Dakar should have a hospital, costing an estimated 45 billion F Cfa, specialized entirely in cancer treatment. “We’re going to build a National Oncology Center in Diamniadio for cancer treatment from A to Z. The foundation stone will be laid next June, and the construction work will take around 30 months. With this center, Senegal will position itself as the country that has set the example in building a national oncology center, the only one in Africa, if not the most modern in the sub-region.

The political ambition is great, but it must not overshadow investment in primary healthcare centers, which are the most frequented by the population. We also need to think regionally, by exploring the idea of creating sub-regional health specialization pools, through dialogue between health authorities in the West African sub-region.
