The budgetary relevance given to the health sector in 2020 has led the increase in its relative weight in comparison with other sectors. The health sector represented a 14,8% of public spending in 2020, or 19% if measured taking out the financial operations and debt service from the denominator, as the Abuja commitment is calculated.
This high relevance is mainly due to the sharp increase in in-kind donations from partners related to the Covid-19 preparation and response (personal protection equipments, Covid tests, tents, etc.).
A relevant increase in domestic funding of +20% was also allocated to the sector, however such an increase has happened in many other years in the past. This increase in internal resources was also related to the EU budget support of 100 MEUR to tackle the coronavirus crisis in different areas, including health.
The challenge is to maintain the prioritization of health in the domestic health budget. The health financing strategy proposes progressively higher increases in absolute terms, reaching + 7.000 M MZN (around 100 MEUR) per year in 2030.
