Health system measures in Kenya – COVID-19 – July 2020

The health system measures put into place in Kenya to contain the spread of COVID-19 are:

*June 10: The Government launched protocols for home-based isolation and care, anticipating to discharge asymptomatic Covid-19 positive cases. Health Chief Administrative Secretary, Rashid Aman, announced that the protocol implementation would start immediately. Those who cannot afford to be isolated in their houses because of space, will be placed in a facility within the community that meets the recommendations for providing such care, he said. This measure is based on available data in Kenya showing that 78% of infected persons admitted in hospitals, are either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic.
*May 4: Kenya has launched its mass COVID-19 testing campaign in the capital Nairobi. The tests is being rolled out in other highly infected areas such as Kibera, Eastleigh and the city of Mombasa.

* Kenya has earmarked Ksh40 billion (0.4 percent of GDP) for additional health expenditure, including enhanced surveillance, laboratory services, isolation units, equipment, supplies, and communication; social protection and cash transfers; food relief; and funds for expediting payments of existing obligations to maintain cash flow for businesses during the crisis.
*March 25: The government announced the disbursement of KES 1 billion for the recruitment of additional medical personnel.
*March 15: Charges on mobile money transactions dropped to limit use of cash. The central bank encouraged the waiving or reducing of charges on mobile money transactions to disincentivize the use of cash. *March 13: The country’s first Covid-19 case is announced.
