Health system measures in Nigeria – COVID-19 -/05/2020

The health system measures put into place in Nigeria to contain the spread of COVID-19 are:

*April 9: The telecom operator Airtel says about USD 500 000 will go towards equipment for a medical facility and USD 300 000 will go towards the purchase of more than 100 000 N95 respirators for health workers in the country. Airtel will also offer free SMS messaging to customers on all networks, as well as free data for customers to access educational and health sites. The tax-free areas are those indicated by the Federal Ministry of Health and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

*April 4: Activation of two new laboratories for testing [Defence Reference Laboratory in Abuja and Biosafety Laboratory in Lagos].

*NCDC launched a WhatsApp APL, a free-to-use service to provide a central source of accurate, verified and current information on Covid-19 in Nigeria.

*March 27: The Federal Government released Naira 10 billion to Lagos State, and Naira 5 billion in special intervention funds to NCDC to equip, expand and provide personnel to its facilities and laboratories across the country. Furthermore, all NCDC staff and experts who are away on training or international assignments are to return immediately. The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) conducting an evacuation mission to bring back Nigerian specialists located in Central Africa.

*March 26: The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced Covid-19 fund contributions by seven Nigerian billionaires and banks. Access Bank Plc, Nigeria’s biggest lender in assets, is teaming up with Aliko Dangote, to provide treatment and isolation centres across Africa’s most populous nation as it braces for the impact of the virus.

*March 9: Establishment of a Presidential Task Force for the control of the virus.

*January 28: The NCDC announced that it had set up Covid-19 group and was ready to activate its incident system if any case emerged in Nigeria.

*January 31: The Federal Government set up a Coronavirus Preparedness Group to mitigate the impact of the virus if it spreads to the country.
