Health system measures in Peru – COVID-19 – July 2020

The health system measures put into place in Peru to contain the spread of COVID-19 are:

*June 10: Under the Temporary Hospital Expansion Plan, the government will construct by end June, 10 temporary hospitals in Lima and nine in other heavily affected regions, providing additional 4504 beds and 232 ICU beds.

*June 3: Peru received 85 doctors and medical professionals from Cuba to join local health workers.

*May 3: Publication of Legislative Decree N° 1474 which strengthens preventive mechanisms and actions, care and protection of elderly adults during the duration of the state of emergency, in particular those in vulnerable situations, such as poverty or extreme poverty.

*April 4: transfer of PEN 720 (USD 215) to workers in the medical sector supporting the COVID-19 emergency.

*March 22: approval of around USD 260 million package for health-related measures, including the support for health services, disinfection efforts in transport and educational sector, and the suspension of tariffs for imports of medicines.

*March 12: Temporary reduction to 0% tariff importation of medical equipment and pharmaceuticals for the duration of the national emergency state -Decreto Supremo N° 051-2020-EF.
