Health system measures in Sweden – COVID-19 – July 2020

The health system measures put into place in Sweden to contain the spread of COVID-19 are:

– 11 May: New measures to strengthen health elderly care (SEK 5bn).

– 7 May: Extended reimbursement for the first day of sickness (cost SEK 3.2bn), continued suspension of medical certificate requirement for the first 14 days of leave (cost SEK 1.1bn).

– The central government will compensate municipalities and regions for extraordinary measures and extra costs in health and medical care associated with the COVID-19 virus. On 2 April, the amount was raised to SEK 3bn from SEK 2bn.

– On 2 April, the government announced that grants to municipalities and regions will increase by SEK 20bn in 2020, up from SEK 5bn previously planned, of which SEK 12.5bn will be permanent.

– From 11 March until 11 May, sickness benefit will be paid for the first day of sickness.
