The ILO recently launched a Toolkit on Social Health Protection, emphasising universal access to affordable, quality healthcare and financial protection during illness, injury, and maternity.
Rooted in a rights-based approach, the toolkit provides practitioners and learners with access to relevant materials to guide the development of inclusive and effective social health protection systems. The toolkit highlights the importance of tracking legal and effective coverage while acknowledging the progress made in increasing population coverage globally. However, it also emphasizes the need for adequacy and equity in social health protection systems.
The International Labour Organization ( ILO) analyses experiences from various regions to support the establishment of resilient, inclusive, and sustainable universal social health protection systems. These efforts aim to address coverage gaps and challenges and leverage social health protection as a transformative policy tool for ensuring access to healthcare without financial hardship.
The ILO collaborates closely with other development partners, particularly within networks focusing on social health protection and health financing including the P4H Network that facilitates complementary efforts and the sharing of expertise to advance universal health coverage goals.
