Japan’s policy shifts the prioritization and hospitalization resources allocation to severely ill or high-risk COVID-19 patients. Severe illness refers to the patient has severe pneumonia and needs to be admitted to an intensive care unit and receive treatment such as being put on a ventilator or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine. This policy shift could create enough capacity that allows patients whose conditions worsen can immediately go to the hospital. However, policy implementation will rely on the individual prefectures’ decision towards the new guidelines.
