Kenya on course to achieving universal health coverage (UHC)

The government of Kenya announced that it is still on track to attaining UHC by 2030. During the state address in Dec, 2021, president Kenyatta urged the senate to expedite the consideration of the 2021 national hospital insurance fund (amendments) bill which was passed by the national assembly. Kenyatta said.

 

Mr. Speaker, Hon. Members, let us tear down the barriers that inhibit our quest to deliver quality health care for all Kenyans

As regards healthcare affordability and financial risk protection, President Kenyatta said,

Our sizeable health budget will be used to expand access to primary health care services, ensure free maternity, eliminate user fees for public primary care, and subsidized health insurance for the elderly and people with severe disabilities

The president also noted that membership of the national health insurance fund (NHIF), has significantly grown from 4 million to 10.5 million members, representing an increase of 163%.
