Access to affordable family planning is an essential component of universal health coverage (UHC) as it is one of the most effective interventions that have shown to reduce maternal and under- mortality rates. For Zambia, to include Family Planning (FP) in the national health insurance package, solidifies government commitment towards improving maternal and child health outcomes and also UHC.
The development of Zambia’s first-ever National Health Insurance Scheme is key to realising its UHC objectives. Civil society action led by the Centre for Reproductive Health and Education designed and implemented a nimble advocacy strategy calling for the inclusion of FP and representation of civil society organisations (CSOs) in the national UHC agenda.
