Lower health care costs in Burkina Faso - P4H Network

Lower health care costs in Burkina Faso

At its traditional cabinet meeting, the Burkinabe government approved a significant reduction in the fees for CT scans, MRIs and haemodialysis. These cost reductions range from 50 to 60% and are scheduled to take effect from the end of April 2024.

“The Council (of Ministers) has approved a significant reduction in the fees for CT scans, MRIs and haemodialysis. At present, the average rate for CT scans in public hospitals is 50,000 F CFA. From the end of April, the rate will be 25,000 F CFA, a 50% reduction whatever the location, cost or technique. For MRI examinations, the average rate in our public hospitals is 100,000 F CFA. From the end of April, this rate will be set at 40,000 F CFA, i.e. a 60% reduction”. Dr Lucien KARGOUGOU, Minister of Health and Public Hygiene.

The Burkina Faso government has also announced the abolition of the 500,000 F CFA lifetime deposit for patients requiring hemodialysis sessions.Dr KARGOUGOU declared that this measure is in line with the vision of the Head of State, which is to enable all Burkinabè to have equitable access to quality health care and services.

Prior to this decision, patients had to pay a deposit of 500,000 CFA francs to be placed on the waiting list for hemodialysis sessions. This amount represented a major obstacle for many patients, who could not afford to pay it.
