Following the health sector strategic plan II (HSSP II) joint annual review meeting which attracted all stakeholders in the health sector, development partners in Malawi asked government to increase its budget allocation to achieve universal healthcare coverage (UHC). Currently, donors fund about 58% of the total health budget, a situation which is unsustainable. Given the global impact of COVID-19, reductions in external funding is inevitable, this means that low income countries such as Malawi must find new and innovative ways to finance their health systems to stay on the path of attaining UHC.
