Maldives enhances service coverage under the Aasandha Scheme - P4H Network

Maldives enhances service coverage under the Aasandha Scheme

In Maldives, Aasandha Scheme, a single national health insurance, has expanded service coverage to include medical check-up, and in-vitro fertilisation. In addition, cost differences for treatment abroad would be covered by the Scheme.

To reduce the financial burden of patients receiving treatment abroad in higher standard hospitals, the Aasandha Scheme will cover cost differences for those receiving overseas treatment under a superior-grade tier hospital. Thus, a comprehensive grading mechanism will be applied to evaluate the quality of overseas hospitals.

With recognition of the importance of preventive service, the routine medical check-up service has been included under the benefit package under the national health insurance or Aasandha Scheme in Maldives. The package of medical check-up will be customized based on needs of specific age groups. In addition, various disease profiling services will be available biannually based on medical indications.

The new services have been promoted through public campaigns to ensure awareness of its benefit among the population. These provisions of services are expected to significantly reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases and the risk of life-threatening conditions, while enhancing a healthy lifestyle among the Maldivian population.

Lastly, in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), a fertility treatment, has been included under the benefit package under the Asandha scheme.

This expansion will enhance service coverage and provide better financial risk protection for Maldivian citizens.
