General Boubacar Dembele can be proud of his plea. He now has the backing of Mali’s parliamentarians to extend compulsory health insurance benefits to several of Mali’s underprivileged groups.
The head of the national health insurance fund is confident that Universal Health Insurance will become a reality. Mali plans to cover the informal sector, which accounts for 78% of potential contributors. AMO will be replaced by RAMU (Régime d’Assurance Maladie Universelle).
This is a decisive turning point for Mali’s social security system, which is currently being overhauled.
