Mali’s Action Plan 2020-2030 – towards better health for all

Health indicators for the Malian population are alarming, particularly in the areas of maternal health, sexual and reproductive health and child survival. Regional factors such as demographic change, instability and climate change are putting additional pressure on the country’s healthcare system. Faced with these challenges, Mali’s Ministry of Health and Social Affairs (MSAS) developed an ambitious vision for the transformation of the healthcare sector, which was published in March 2020: The Mali Action Plan (MAP). This initiative builds on the reform launched in February 2019 and is in line with the Strategic Framework for Economic Development (CREDD) and the National Strategic Plan for the Health Sector (PRODESS).

The overall aim of MAP is to enable all inhabitants to live in good health by ensuring free access to certain health services and care. To this end, five main pillars of the health and social sector will be restructured over the coming years: the primary healthcare system, the secondary healthcare system, diagnostic and laboratory services, the pharmacy supply and distribution system, solidarity and social protection. MAP defines a coherent set of priorities to show the way forward, while emphasizing values such as equitable access, community leadership, national ownership, innovation and performance.
