Mauritania: 100,000 low-income families to benefit from health insurance

This was an election promise by the President, and it has been kept. The first health insurance cards have been allocated to vulnerable families, in line with the commitment made by Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who was elected two years ago. This initiative paves the way for full coverage of healthcare costs. Medical consultations, treatments, hospitalization… everything will be paid for by the state, as the Agence mauritanienne d’information (AMI).

Launched at the end of May 2021 as part of the Health Insurance for All project, the operation will benefit 100 000 families, or 620 000 people. That’s almost 12% of the population of 4.5 million.

This is a major challenge, the details of which you can read here.
