The Mozambique government is considering the introduction of Social Health Insurance and the regulation of fees charged by hospital units as part of the sector’s financing strategy, a government source announced.
The ideas were presented on Wednesday by Daniel Simone Nhachengo, head of the planning department of the Ministry of Health, at a conference on the sector in Maputo, quoted today by the newspaper Noticias.
The strategy would help improve both resource management and the quality of public service, he said.
Addressing the topics during a presentation at the event, Nhachengo also pointed to greater financial sustainability as a priority for the sector.
This year’s State Budget proposes financing 86 percent of health sector expenditure, some of which has not been included in the document. Donors would contribute 66 percent of investment resources, according to an analysis of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) at the end of 2017.
“In 2016, donors accounted for 84 percent of investment spending, but a decade ago they supplied 93 percent,” he adds.
