The 11th Maldives Health Statistics 2020 shows Maldives government’s commitment to provide better health service and social health protection through continuously increased allocation of the budget to the health sector. It shows that current health expenditure (percentage of GDP) increased from 9.2% in 2011 to 10.2% in 2016, while there was a significant drop in household out of pocket expenditure, from 49.0 % in 2011 to 20.6% in 2017. In 2020, the government health spending skyrocketed in response to COVID-19 pandemic in which 16.5 % of the total government expenditure was allocated to health.
