The Malawi health sector is predominantly donor funded (about 58% of the total health expenditure). To ensure reliable and sustainable financing of the health sector, the government of Malawi has embarked on a number of reforms through innovative health financing. One such reform has been exploring the introduction of optional paying services in selected hospitals in Malawi to generate revenue. Although some may argue that introduction of the paying services in hospitals maybe regressive and could push the poor and most vulnerable population further into poverty and deter the attainment of Universal Health Coverage, the Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo, argues that the reform will reduce congestion in hospitals and overall improve service delivery.
