Over 326,000 vulnerable households in Nairobi have been registered for the National Hospital Insurance Insurance Fund (NHIF) by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS). The NHIF is part of the government’s universal health care policy to ensure that vulnerable households are protected from financial catastrophe due to exorbitant medical care expenses. The NMS Health service Director, Dr. Ouma Oluga said that the target population comprises the most vulnerable residents and 66,000 families are already enjoying the services. The implementation process of the project is being done in phases, with the first phase aiming to cover 20% of Nairobi’s poor households and progressively covering vulnerable households. As it stands Nairobi has a population of 4.3 million, of which 16.7% are poor. Dr. Oluga said
Once we cover that population, the rest of the people are either working and can afford healthcare or have employers who can pay for their cover
