A regional workshop opened on Monday June 21 in Cotonou, on the involvement of social movements and other civil society players in the effective extension of social protection in Africa. This is a joint learning process involving the Inspir-Afrique network, technical executives from the relevant ministerial departments and those from regional institutions.
Approximately 71% of the world’s population and 90% of the population of Africa do not enjoy social protection, according to the International Labour Organization (ILO). Workers in the informal sector and in rural areas are the ones most affected by the non-enjoyment of this human right, despite the fact that it is recognized by several international legal instruments and texts.
So, how can we successfully implement policies for universal health coverage and genuine financial inclusion by involving social movements and other civil society organizations (Osc)? This issue is the focus of the regional workshop being held in the form of a webinar from June 21 to 24 in Cotonou.
At the end of the workshop, a roadmap will be drawn up for a synergy of actions based on international solidarity, after the players have appropriated the studies and documents produced on the subject. It will culminate in the “Cotonou Declaration”, whose guidelines will enable us to meet the challenge by linking state and private initiatives.
