One of the potential approaches to increasing vaccine equity as part of the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, is reducing Africa’s reliance on global vaccine supply chains. This can be enhanced by transferring competencies for vaccine production from upper income countries to other regions. A leading pharmaceutical company in South Africa has received financial support of €600 million from a combination of sources including the IFC, the French Development institution Proparco, DEG – the German development finance institution, and the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.
