South Africa donates two million J&J COVID-19 jabs to other African countries

The government of South Africa pledged to donate over two million doses of the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines worth USD 19.2 million to other African countries in December, 2021. The pledge proceeded the signing of an agreement with the African Vaccination Acquisition Trust to make the donation through the African Renaissance Fund). AVAT was formed following the establishment of the African Union’s (AU) COVID-19 African Vaccination Acquisition Task Team () in November 2020 by President Cyril Ramaphosa as the then chairperson of the AU. The main purpose of the task team is to secure the necessary vaccines and financing resources for achieving Africa’s COVID-19 vaccination strategy, which targets vaccinating a minimum of 60% of the continent’s population.
